Democracy, or rather good democratic governance, is now not only intrinsically linked to the respect of human rights but is also recognised as the most effective form of governance to ensure stability, sustainability and well-being.

Political Parties

In October 2002 the Integrated Project “Making democratic institutions work” (IP1), organised an expert workshop to take stock of the work already undertaken by the Council of Europe relating to the transparency of the financing of political parties and their democratic functioning and to investigate possibilities for future work, including the production of a manual on this subject.
